Acianthus exsertus

Dark mosquito orchid

This deciduous terrestrial grows in moist areas of open eucalypt forests. The heart shaped leaf grows to about 20 mm by 30 mm and is green above and purplish below. The leaf is usually held just above the leaf litter.

The flower stem grows to about 20 cm tall holding up to 20 flowers, each about 5 mm across.

This orchid can be easily identified by its relatively thin dorsal held well away from the column as well as having a smooth heart shaped labellum.
