Caleana major

Large duck orchid, flying duck orchid

The deciduous terrestrial orchid grows in open forest in protected areas.  It has a very distinctive flower, giving rise to its common name of flying duck orchid.

The leaf is green on top with purple spotting with a purple underside. The flower stem grows to 40 cm with up to 5 flowers. The flowers are 20 to 25 mm tall, green to reddish in colour.

This orchid is very distinctive with only one other similar orchid, Caleana minor, a much smaller flower with warts covering the labellum.
