Dendrobium bowmanii

Straggly pencil orchid

This epiphyte or lithophyte grows in the rainforest verges around Brisbane where it hangs conspicuously from the trees.

The leaves are semi-pendulous giving this orchid an untidy appearance. The leaves are shallowly grooved and grow to 15 cm long by 4 mm thick.  The flower is about 25 mm across and is green or yellowish green with a white ruffled labellum.

This orchid cannot be confused with any other orchid when in flower.  When not it flower, the plant is similar to Dendrobium schoeninum, but D. schoeninum can be distinguished by its deeply grooved leaves and much more erect habit.
