Pterostylis grandiflora

Cobra greenhood, superb greenhood

This terrestrial orchid grows in moist to wet areas in rainforests around Brisbane. It is locally common and will form large colonies of plants where the conditions are right. This magnificent greenhood is arguably our most spectacular.

The rosette has up to 9 stalked leaves to about 10 mm by 20 mm. Plants which form rosettes will not flower that year.

Plants which flower form a flower stem to about 40 cm tall with up to about 6 leaves up the stem. The flower is translucent white with green stripes to about 25 mm tall. The petals are rufous brown.

This very distinctive species can be readily identified by its broad brown petals.
